What My Daughter Taught Me About Praying - Faith Filled Mommy Moments

Hi all of you cute mommies!  Today I am launching a brand new series on my blog!

Faith Filled Mommy Moments is a safe place for moms of any religion to share their experiences on how their faith &/or beliefs helped them through a moment in motherhood. Because Heaven knows I need all the inspiration I can get!  I will be accepting Guest Posters for the majority of this series & have some awesome moms lined up for you!  I'm hoping this series will inspire other moms, help them draw nearer to their beliefs (whatever they are), & unite us all together.  If you are interested in sharing one of your stories in a post on this series, email me at michelle@trustmeimamom.com for more information.
For my first Faith Filled Mommy Moments, I'd like to share a story with you that's close to my heart...

As you may or may not know, my oldest daughter has a neurological disorder called Apraxia.  Apraxia is a condition that affects the way her brain connects with the rest of her body, but it especially affects her speech.  It's a pretty challenging diagnosis & I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Paige handles it with such beauty.

About 9 months ago (she would have been about 3 1/2), she started getting very sad that no one could understand her - not even her mom.  It was heart breaking for me.  I tried everything - EVERYTHING I could to figure out what she was saying.  Getting sad like that wasn't like her either, so that just broke my little mommy heart even more.

In my moment of desperation, a thought came to me.  One last possibility for us to understand each other.  "Why don't you pray together?"  Of course!  Why didn't I think of that ten minutes ago when all of this sadness started initially?

I explained that sometimes when life is hard, we can pray and our Heavenly Father will help us.  I asked her if she wanted to pray & she nodded her head yes.  She knelt down, folded her arms, bowed her head & closed her eyes in the most humble way possible, that only a child could do.  I encouraged her on what to say while saying my own prayer in my mind -- I was begging God to help us.

When we finished our prayer(s), I looked up at her.  I asked her to try to tell me again.  It took literally 5 seconds for me to understand her this time.  I finally figured out what she was saying!

I honestly don't remember what it was she was trying to tell me that day, but I do remember how grateful we both were that our prayers were answered and we could again understand each other.  It was such a relief!

Although it wasn't like Paige to get sad like that, it happened again several times that month.  At those times, when she saw the confusion on my face & was sad that I couldn't understand her, she would always fold her arms suggesting that we say a prayer again.

She knew God would help us.

And do you know what?

He did!

Each time she prayed, I was touched by her example.  She taught me a lot that day & in the month following, but one thing stuck out the most.

She taught me to always rely on God.

Heaven knows I can't do it alone.  This life is hard.  Paige proved to me in her moments of sadness, that she could turn to someone who knew her pain & who loved her unconditionally that he would help her.  She knew she needed God.  I am so grateful for that reminder, because it's so easy to get caught up in doing things on our own.

I know her acts of praying were small, but they sure meant something to me - something big.  Something that I will treasure in my heart for the rest of my life.

I've said it before in reference to serving others, but I think it applies here.  Sometimes the smallest acts mean the most to others.

Do you have a story about how prayer touched your life?

Please, share it with me in the comments below!

  1. What a sweet moment! I am so glad you had this experience. :) I love when my little 4 year old prays for things I need in my life without me asking him to.

  2. Love this! Me, my husband and 10-year old daughter, Faith pray every night together. She has CP and is in a wheelchair but she is bound and determined to try to get down on her knees and pray at her bedside. She truly lives up to her name!
