Jewelry Sensory Box

Playing with babies & kids is so important (but sometimes a lot of work for mom!).  I love sensory bins because they let the kids explore and play and use their imagination.  Even babies can play in sensory boxes -- you just have to be extra careful to watch them & make sure what's in it isn't something they will choke on.

I've been thinking for a long time about making a jewelry sensory box for my daughters (ages 1 and 4), so when I teamed up with the Ultimate Guide for Baby's First Year, I decided to finally do it!

Jewelry Sensory Box for babies, toddlers & preschoolers

A great way to go about making this a baby-friendly sensory bin is to use teething jewelry! (see below to see my recommendations for some good baby-friendly jewelry for this sensory bin)  If you have preschoolers or older kids, you might feel comfortable letting them use your old jewelry or kids jewelry from the dollar store.  Don't forget, though... safety first!

Fillers:
  • yarn & beads (or macaroni noodles)
  • marbles
  • rice
  • water beads
  • feathers
  • shoe laces
  • pipe cleaners (so they can make their own bracelets & necklaces)

Put in the bin:
  • teething jewelry
  • dress-up jewelry
  • your old jewelry
  • jewelry box
  • mirror
  • rings
  • ring box
  • jewelry bags
  • medical id bracelets

My girls had loads of fun playing with this sensory box!  Lindsey just kept running around wearing a necklace and holding one, and Paige had fun stuffing all of the jewelry into a jewelry bag... silly girl.

She did, though, love trying on all of the jewelry after that.  She even brought me a big mirror and told me to hold it so she could look at herself.  She said, "mom, please hold it, I can see my whole body."  She was so funny when looking at herself in the mirror, I wish I had a video of it!  She also asked me to braid some of the pipe cleaners into bracelets for her... purple bracelets, of course!  (she's on a purple and pink kick right now...) We also had fun putting rings into "ring slots" in the jewelry box & the ring box.  That was good practice for her fine motor skills!

If you're wanting to use some baby friendly jewelry, here are some I found that I think are adorable!
